What Next?

During the week commencing Monday April 4th University College Birmingham will be holding a series of events for students with the objective of encouraging them to consider ‘What Next’ on completion of their course.

Events during the week, run by the Careers and Employability team include:

  • Presentations for International Students on Monday 4th April, 10am until 2pm
  • Postgraduate Fair on Tuesday 5th April, 2pm until 5pm at Bar One, The Maltings
  • Options after FE on Wednesday 6th April, 4pm until 7pm at the Cafe-5th Floor, Summer Row
  • GAP/Volunteering/Summer Work Fair on Thursday 7th April, 12pm until 3pm at Bar One, The Maltings

In response to a student request, there are now loan copies available of Gray's Anatomy: the anatomical basis of clinical practice (40th edition) at Richmond House Library. This title is on several Sports Therapy and Salon Business Management reading lists.

Compact English Dictionary
If you need to borrow or refer to a dictionary, there are now copies of the Compact Oxford English Dictionary for University and College Students at Richmond House Library. The dictionary includes a useful section on effective writing for college and career, such as writing CVs, job application letters and emails, reports, and essay writing and planning.

Dressing Big Hair DVD
If you are looking for ideas on long hair styling, we have a new Patrick Cameron DVD, Ultraviolet: The Art of Dressing Big Hair on the display stand at Richmond House Library. Headphones are available at the Library counter, so that you can watch this DVD in the Library.

The Great British Hairdresser
Currently on television is a 10-programme series which has salon stylists competing to be crowned the Great British Hairdresser by James Brown. The winner who survives the weekly challenges that are set will be awarded the job of styling the hair of an A-list star for the cover of Glamour magazine. See the James Brown website for the trailer to the series, and other info.
The next episode is tonight 10.00pm on E4, and repeated Friday 18th 11.05pm on E4, then Saturday 19th 11.55am on Channel 4. You can also use the Channel 4, 4oD service to see episodes.

Online Reading Lists
Just a reminder that if you are
looking for information in books to support study on a particular module, that you can access online reading lists via the Library online catalogue. The online catalogue can also be accessed through UCB Online from the Library tab. The reading list will give you the texts that have been recommended by the lecturer for each module, so they are well worth checking out.

Don't forget that all UCB students now have access to a new service from the Library. Connect@UCB is an online help desk which you can visit to get support in finding useful information. Simply log on during the advertised hours and a member of staff will be available to help you with your enquiry - perfect if you're unable to make it into College!
The desk will initially be open each weekday from 10am - 12 noon and 2pm - 4pm
To access Connect@UCB you will first need a Wimba Pronto account - information about this software and getting a free account is available from UCB Online.
