If you are studying on the Salon Management course and are thinking about setting up your own business in the future, here are a couple of websites that will provide you with plenty of useful information.
The first one is StartIn Business. A few of the things that you can find information on are: business plans, a guide to setting up a business, and finding or choosing business premises. There is also a useful links option, where you might want to click on the HM Revenue & Customs link to see guidance on being self-employed and how National Insurance and tax might affect your business.
Another good site that's well designed and really easy to use to access information is Business Link. Try clicking on the 'your type of business' link where you can enter the location of a business to receive relevant information for that area. I have recently had a query about a customer service book that is on a reading list- Customer Service for Dummies. This is a title that we also have in stock as an e-book, so I thought I would remind you that we have electronic versions of some (although not all) of our reading list titles.
The e-books are useful if you have access to the Internet (either at home or in College) as you can read them, search for a particular topic or chapter and even print pages -up to 20% of the text. You can tell if we stock an e-book as when you do a catalogue search it will be listed on the copy information, and tell you which Athens database you can find it in. We also have an e-books catalogue which you can access via the Library Online Catalogue home page if you want to browse the e-books titles that we have available- although we will be adding new titles. Click on the links above to see the copy information for the customer service book or the e-book catalogue information. Don't be puzzled if you click on the e-book catalogue link and can't read the text- you just need to click on the % button above the information and enlarge the text.

BBC Radio 1 is celebrating it's 40th anniversary this year. It was certainly a 'must have' radio station to have playing in hair salons in the 1960s, and a vast improvement on the previous BBC stations (for those of you too young to remember them, you'll have to take my word for it!)
This seems like an opportune moment to remind you that these days you need to have a Performing Rights Society Licence to play music in the salon. For all the information that you need about obtaining a licence, have a look at the MCPS-PRC website. You will find the information by clicking on the Why Do You Need to Pay to Use Music? link under the Hot Topics section. The majority of the other jobs in the top ten are managerial- so if you are planning to run your own salon at the end of your studies then you should have even more of a fulfilling career ahead of you! To read more about the research behind these findings and to see how other professions fared in the job satisfaction chart click here to take you to the Daily Mail article

Recycling household rubbish is very much in the news at the moment - read an article from The Times here . The Hairdressers International website includes the HJI Blog, well worth a visit for keeping up-to date with industry information.

This month sees the launch of the VisitBritain spa accreditation scheme, where an assessor will carry out a mystery shopper visit by booking a treatment as a normal client. The following designators have been developed: Day Spa, Hotel Spa, Salon Spa, Sports and Fitness Spa, Natural Spa, Destination Spa, Resort Spa and Medi- Spa, so that consumers will understand the different types of spa available. You are probably using journals recommended on module reading lists and accessing online articles from other publications via Athens, but have you thought of looking to see whether other titles that we stock might be of use?
