National Make-Up Awards 2011
The UK's first National Make-Up Awards for Make-Up Artists will be taking place live on Monday 28th February 2011 at the Professional Beauty Awards held at ExCel Exhibition Centre, London. There are four categories including Student Make-Up Artist. The last date to register is 24th December. See the event website for details.

The Clothes Show Live 2010
The Clothes Show Live is currently taking place at the NEC, Birmingham. Gok Wan is presenting in the Fashion Theatre 3-5th December, but the Clothes Show Live will continue at the NEC until 8th December. See the event website for more info.

IMATS London Show

The 2011 International Make-Up Artist Trade Show will be taking place on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th January at Alexandra Palace in London. There are several types of ticket with discounts for students, although during general show hours it is open to the general public. Young Beautician of the Year
Watch BBC3 on Tuesday 7th December 10.30pm- 11.30pm to see four beauticians competing to be named Young Beautician of the Year. The contestants will be showing their skills at waxing, tanning, a beauty quiz and two of the contestants will be performing a 'yummy mummy' makeover in the final round. Judging them will be facialist Vaishaly Patel. If you missed Young Hairdresser of the Year, shown earlier in the series, you can watch it on BBC iplayer

The Salon Magazine
The December 2010 issue of The Salon Magazine (it has hairdressing and beauty therapy info) is now available. Features in this issue include cost effective ways to market your salon online and hair and beauty services celebrities are buying and trying. Click on the title above to access.

Accessing Human Kinetics Journals
If you have been used to accessing the Human Kinetics journals via the Non-Athens resources link on UCB Online, you will notice that there has been a change this year. To access the list of Non-Athens resources, you now need to click on the 'wheel' icon (the one with the green tick) on the bottom right-hand corner of your computer screen. Choose 'portal' from the list of options and this will bring up the list of Non-Athens resources. If you have any problems with this, please let me know.

Leisure Industry Week 2010

An event of interest to everyone in the leisure industry is taking place next week, 21st - 23 September, at the NEC.
Leisure Industry Week includes The Sport Show, Pool and Spa and Health and Fitness. Highlights include live demos, education and conferences, as well as high profile industry speakers. The theme for the SPRIG 2010 conference is 'SPRIG inSPAration : resources for spa and health tourism' and it will be held on 30th July 2010 at the University of Derby, Buxton (http://www.derby.ac.uk/udb)

It might seem a long way off, but the Total Beauty Show is taking place at Excel in London on Sunday 27th February and Monday 28th February 2011. Journals Area at Summer Row
If you've just returned from the Easter break and are intending to use the journals at Summer Row Library you will find that they are no longer next to the group work area on the ground floor. The journals have been relocated to the upper floor of the library, to enable upgrading of the group work area.

FHT 2010 Conferences
Complementary Therapies and The Pregnant Client is a one-day conference taking place at The King's Fund, London, on 24 September 2010. and will address the latest research, best practice and issues for therapists practising or considering practising on pregnant clients.
Sports Therapy: Treating the Elite is a one-day conference exploring the use of sports therapy by elite sportspeople and featuring the latest in injury recognition and treatments. The conference will be held at Coventry University on 20th November 2010.

A tv programme that might be of interest is showing tonight (12 April) at 10:00pm - 11:05pm on Channel 4- The World's Strangest Plastic Surgery and Me. This includes a man who has spent the last 20 years undergoing surgery so he can resemble a tiger.

The Clothes Show Young Make-up Artist of the Year Award is open to artists with experience of three years or less and those studying and practising in the fields of make-up and beauty. The closing date for entries is 21 May 2010, and the award will take place at the Style Stage at Clothes Show London on Sunday 27th June.
