IMATS- International Make-Up Artist Trade Show 2012

The 2012 International Make-Up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) will be taking place at Alexandra Palace, London, February 4th & 5th 2012. IMATS London 2012 features special guests Rob Freitas (Star Trek, Men in Black), BAFTA winner Neill Gorton (Saving Private Ryan, Dr. Who), Einat Dan (Vogue Sposa, Maxim), Lan Nguyen (Vogue, Elle) and Dany Sanz (Make Up For Ever founder) and also a make-up museum. Keynote speakers include BAFTA winner Nick Dudman, the make-up effects mastermind behind the entire Harry Potter film series; he’ll recreate a goblin make-up on actor Warwick Davis live at the show. New Reading List Books in Stock

There are loan copies now available of Anglomania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion, which is on the Historical Perspectives of Hair and Fashion module reading list.
There are also copies of Sport and Exercise Nutrition, Lanham-New, in stock - this title is on the Sports Nutrition reading list. There is a student companion website to accompany this book that includes multiple choice questions, short answer questions and essay titles that might help you with your studies. Imagine- Vidal Sassoon

Tomorrow evening, 22nd November, on BBC 1 at 10.35pm, you can see a biopic that details the significance of Vidal Sassoon’s hairdressing career as well his early life, which included seven years in an orphanage and time as a soldier in the Israeli army. The programme includes interviews with Mary Quant and John Frieda.

TV Programmes of Interest This Week

There are two TV programmes this week that might be of interest. The first is Skin Deep: the business of beauty which is a consumer show exploring the downside of treatments in the hair and beauty industry. Episode 1 (on screen tonight, 8.30pm on BBC3) includes a student who after visiting a salon for hair extensions was left with a bald patch.
Anyone interested in theatrical and special effects might want to watch the film Hellboy11: The Golden Army, which is on Friday 18th November on ITV1 at 10.35pm.

Overdue Book Notices

This term we are introducing a new service which can remind you when any books you have borrowed are coming up to the due date. This means that you can receive a message to your College email account 2 days before an item is due, so that you can return or renew it before you accumulate any fines on your account.

You will need to opt-in to make use of this service. Simply take your ID card to the main library counter at either Summer Row or Richmond House, and staff there can add the service to your account.

The Spa Life UK 2011 event, which includes the UK Spa and Wellness Conference is being held at Center Parcs, Elveden Forest, near Cambridge, on the 8th & 9th November.
The Conference programme opens with key note speeches from business leaders and prominent industry figures, and is aimed at all spa & wellness professionals from every business sector involved in spa operations including; spa, hospitality, health & fitness, local authority leisure clubs and salon owners /operators. Summon - an easier way to find online journal articles

If you are planning to do some research during the summer vacation and are looking for an easier way to find online journal articles, you now have access to Summon. Instead of having to look in each individual Athens database for articles, you can use Summon to search through all the Athens journal databases. So, if you would like to have a look at Summon and give it a try you can access it via the UCB online Login screen. You will find the Summon link in the menu on the right of the Login screen. Please remember that the 'finished' version of Summon will not be available until September, so it's currently on it's 'trial-run'.

The Apprentice - Episode 4: Beauty Treatments
Series 7 of The Apprentice is now underway and next week sees the remaining candidates meeting Alan Sugar at the British Museum to discover what their next task is. They are asked to set up beauty treatment businesses in Birmingham, setting up shops in different areas of Birmingham. You’ll be pleased to hear that online access to full text articles in Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research and Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise is now available via Athens and the Ovid database.

Journal of Strength & Conditioning Research includes access to back issues starting 1987 and Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise has access to back issues starting 1980. There is also access to Medicine & Science in Sports from 1969-1979.

Copies are now available of Principles of Anatomy & Physiology, (2011, 13th ed.) Tortora, at Richmond House Library. The Great British Hairdresser
Currently on television is a 10-programme series which has salon stylists competing to be crowned the Great British Hairdresser by James Brown. The winner who survives the weekly challenges that are set will be awarded the job of styling the hair of an A-list star for the cover of Glamour magazine. See the James Brown website for the trailer to the series, and other info.
The next episode is tonight 10.00pm on E4, and repeated Friday 18th 11.05pm on E4, then Saturday 19th 11.55am on Channel 4. You can also use the Channel 4, 4oD service to see episodes.

The online catalogue can also be accessed through UCB Online from the Library tab. The reading list will give you the texts that have been recommended by the lecturer for each module, so they are well worth checking out.

The British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) will be holding their Annual Student Conference 12 - 13th April at the University of Chester.
The theme of this year's conference is 'Integrations and Innovations: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Sport and Exercise Science'.

National Make-Awards
The first UK National Make-Up Awards will be taking place live on Monday 28th February 2011 at the Professional Beauty Show, which is being held in London. The judging panel is made up of top professionals from the beauty industry, and includes Daniel Sandler, Hayley Tammadon and Jackie Tyson.
