Habia Workshops for Updated Standards in Beauty, Nails and Spa
The shape of future qualifications in beauty therapy, nail services and spa therapy will be explored at a series of workshops looking at key changes to the updated National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Beauty Therapy, Nail Services and Spa Therapy at Levels 1, 2 and 3. International Make -Up Artist Trade Show 2010
The
International Make-up Artist Trade Show (IMATS) will be held at Alexandra Palace in London on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st January 2010. If you are interested in make-up and would like to experiment with products or learn the latest techniques, have a look at the event website for more details and ticket information. The show is open to the public and you can buy a one day student ticket for £28.00 or a two day ticket for £48.00. If you can't make the show it's worth having a look at the website, as it includes a photo gallery and a video gallery of last year's show.

Christmas Holiday
Don't forget to return or renew any books that you have on loan before you break up for the Christmas holiday, so that you don't have any unwelcome fines in the new year. You can renew your books using the online catalogue, ( click on the My Account tab at the top of the page) either in College or at home via the College website. Any additional books that you take out on loan will be issued until after Christmas, but make sure you check on your receipt which day they are due back. The Library Christmas Opening hours are also available on the Online Catalogue

The Salon Magazine
The December issue of a new addition to our journal collection is now available at Richmond House. The Salon magazine is a trade publication that covers all aspects of the UK hairdressing and beauty therapy industry. You can access the current issue and back issues from 2007 online from The Salon magazine website There is a ‘search’ button to look for a particular topic in the magazine and pages can be printed out. After clicking on the link, click on the ‘inside this issue’ tab at the top of the page, then ‘view latest e-mag’ from the drop-down menu. On the current issue page there is a tab to the left to ‘view archive’ and a tab to the right to ‘search’.

Ebooks Catalogue
If you want to see what e-books are available, you can check by using the Ebook catalogue link that is on the online Library Catalogue. Remember to read the Ebooks User Guide before checking the catalogue as the different e-books databases vary in the way that you use them. We now have four e-book databases, the newest addition is ebrary which includes some beauty therapy, biology and massage books, and you can access all of them via the Athens link.

Young Hairdresser of the Year
A TV programme of interest will be showing on BBC3 next week- The Young Hairdresser of the Year. Five young hairdressers will be competing, and the tasks include creating a glossy hairdo for a magazine cover, an 'iconic' look and another for the catwalk. The judges are Adee Phelan and Beverly C (Corbella). The programme starts 10.30pm-11.30pm on Monday 30th November, but is repeated at various times on BBC3 later next week. I've recently had a query from a Sports Therapy student about accessing the Cochrane Library. The Cochrane Library (which offers free online access) contains high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. It includes reliable evidence from Cochrane and other systematic reviews, clinical trials, and more. Cochrane reviews bring you the combined results of the world’s best medical research studies. The good news is that you can access this resource via Athens and the WileyInterScience database. Select the Wiley database from the list of Athens resources, type in 'cochrane library', click on the 'publication titles' option and 'go' and you will then have access to this useful resource.

The International Therapist magazine (on several reading lists, so worth checking out) will now be published quarterly instead of bi-monthly, so the next issue will be arriving in January 2010. The current issue includes articles on soft tissue release, ayurvedic treatments and advice about COSHH and waxing patch tests on the 'Ask an expert' page.

Human Kinetics Online Journals for Sports Therapy- UPDATE

An update to my post Tuesday 27th regarding access to the Human Kinetic online journals. There is no longer a 'journals' tab on the Human Kinetics homepage to click on so you need to click on the 'more' tab, top right of the homepage. You then select 'journals' from the drop-down menu and you will see pictorial images of all the titles available. Click on the 'image' of the title you want to access and you can then choose from 'current issue', 'back issues' or 'search' using a keyword for the title selected or all the Human Kinetics titles available using this database.

Clothes Show Live 2009
Tickets are now on sale for Clothes Show Live 2009, taking place at the NEC, Friday 4th-Wednesday 9th December. The show is celebrating it's 21st birthday, and joining the celebrations is Gok Wan, who will be presenting in the Fashion Theatre and styling on the Hair & Beauty Stage on Sunday 6th December. Several members of the Hollyoaks cast will also be paying a visit to the show. Self-issue System
Any current students returning in September will notice something different when taking books out on loan. We now have a new Library self-service kiosk system in operation at both Summer Row and Richmond House.
Follow the instructions on the screen of the self- service kiosk to issue or return items. If you have any fines exceeding £10 you cannot borrow any more items. Your fines will need to be cleared before you can issue any books, and you can pay your fines by pressing the pay fines button on the self service kiosk.
You will need your College ID card and pin number in order to be able to borrow or return books, and also to pay fines.

These were cosmetic companies operating during and after the Second World War. The Apprentice
Next week's 'The Apprentice' (click to read 'The Apprentice' blog) sees Sir Alan Sugar challenging the teams to set up a cosmetic company. Full Text Sports Therapy Journal Articles

We currently have full text access to a new journal that you might find of interest. This is 'Sports Technology', available through Athens and the Wiley InterScience database. To access this journal, log on to the Wiley InterScience database, then click on the 'New Journals' box on the right of the homepage. Select the 'view home page' option by the selected title to see the articles available.
There should also be another new journal available soon via Wiley InterScience; this is 'Shoulder and Elbow', which is due for publication in June 2009.

Sumo Hairdressing
There's a hair related TV programme on BBC 4 tonight (8.30- 9.00pm). 'The Sumo Tokoyama: The Art of Hairdressing for Wrestlers' deals with the aesthetics of sumo wrestling and the traditional top knots that are crafted daily by the tokoyama, or sumo hairdresser. So, if you like the idea of specialising in this area, or are just curious, you might want to take a look at the programme. See this week's Radio Times TV listings.

The Fitness Industry Association (FIA) Flame Conference, which is a new interactive health and fitness industry conference, will be taking place 9-10 June 2009, at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton. Afro Hair & Beauty Live 2009

The Afro Hair and Beauty Live event will be taking place on Sunday 24th May and Monday 25th May (Spring Bank Holiday) at Alexandra Palace in London. There will be hair and fashion shows, seminars and workshops, hair and beauty advice and natural hair, lace and weaves. Tickets cost £12.00 at the door, but with your student ID you will be able to get a ticket for £10.00. New Sports Therapy Books in Stock

Copies of the 8th edition of ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription are now available at both Richmond House and Summer Row Library.
We also have a new taping book in stock: Taping and Wrapping made Simple, which is on the Strength and Conditioning and the Profiling Fitness reading lists. As an added bonus, there is an accompanying DVD with 40+ video clips of taping and wrapping available with this book, so that you can see exactly how to perform procedures properly.

Human Kinetics Journals Online Access

Just a reminder for any Sports Therapy students looking for online access to journal articles, that there are numerous Human Kinetics journals available though the Athens link.
Click on the 'Library' tab on Blackboard, then on the Non-Athens resources link on the Blackboard Library Page (under hotlinks), and then select ‘Human Kinetics’ from the ‘1. A-Z’. If you then click on the 'Journals' tab on the Human Kinetics page you will see a pictorial list of the titles available.

Guild Gazette Online
The 'Guild Gazette' (the official membership magazine of the Guild of Professional Beauty Therapists) is now available online. It's just like reading a print magazine, but instead of turning the pages by hand you use the mouse to click on the corner of the page.You can read the March/April 2009 issue and also issues going back to 2007. The Sapphires Awards
The Sapphires, presented by Salon Business magazine , is a new hairdressing industry awards event, specifically designed to recognise and reward success in the franchise sector. It will be taking place at The Dorchester Hotel in London on Monday 15 June 2009. For more information, see the Salon Business website Click on the 'News' tab at the top of the homepage, then scroll down and click on 'The Sapphires are Coming'. Might be worth clicking on the 'Image Gallery' or 'Beauty' tabs while you are on the site to keep up to date with what's happening.

Hairdressing Training


Any hairdressing student who has had problems accessing the Hairdressing Training database via Athens, due to technical problems, will be pleased to hear that it is now available again. If you are unaware of this valuable resource, aimed at NVQ level hairdressing students, now might be the time to have a look at the database. To access Hairdressing Training, click on the 'Library' tab on Blackboard, then on the 'Athens' link to take you to the 'My Athens' page. Scroll down the page until you see the 'Mimas Services' menu and click on the Hairdressing Training link.

3rd International Conference on Movement Dysfunction

The 3rd International Conference on Movement Dysfunction will take place Thursday 30 October- Sunday 1st November 2009, at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre. This conference will be of interest to therapists using movement, exercise and other strategies to rehabilitate movement dysfunction. The theme for 2009 is applying the research and science behind biomechanics, neurophysiologyand biosychosocial influences to clinical practice. More info can be found on the conference website.
