The Salon magazine is a trade publication that covers all aspects of the UK hairdressing and beauty therapy industry. Pool and Spa Expo 2013

The 2013 Pool and Spa Expo will be taking place at the NEC Birmingham Thursday 24th - Saturday 26th January. Thursday and Friday are trade only days and Saturday 26th is Consumer Day for the public, although trade visitors are welcome on that day as well. Register online now for free tickets.
The event covers pools, spas, jacuzzi, saunas, hot tubs and swim spas, as well as water treatments, and features seminars, a new product zone and the latest technology. Also, The National Pool and Spa Awards will be presented on Friday 25th . See the event website for more info.

Young Apprentice - Hair Product

BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2012

The shortlist for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year has just been announced. It's a pretty hard task this Olympic year to pick one winner from such an impressive list of possible contenders for the title. Viewers will be able to vote by telephone on the night of the event, Sunday 16th December , but you can cast your vote for your favourite nominee in the Radio Times poll now.

Bradley Wiggins: A Year in Yellow

You can catch up on a documentary following  Bradley Wiggins through 2012 when he became the first Briton to win the Tour de France, as well as capturing gold in the time trial at the London Olympic Games, on Sky Atlantic Repeat today 11pm - 12.30am. So if you'd like an insight into what it takes to be a Tour de France and an Olympic champion, this will be worth watching.

The Clothes Show Live 2012

Tickets are available now for The Clothes Show Live 2012, which will be taking place at the NEC, Birmingham 7th - 11th December. JLS will be performing their DJ set on Monday 10th December only. Britain's Best 2012 Hairdressing Competition

'Britain's Best' is a new hairdressing event taking place on Sunday 18th November at the Hilton Metropole Hotel, National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham. It is a new interactive artistic and style competition designed to find "Britain’s Best” stylists, barbers and salon owners, as well as celebrate the work of many otherwise unsung contributors to the trade.There are floor competitions in the following categories, (the closing date for these is tomorrow, 9th November).

• Gents Fashion (senior and junior)

• Bridal
• Colour of the Day

New Resource- American Vogue Archive

You can now access a new online resource - the American Vogue Archive .

The Vogue Archive contains the entire run of Vogue magazine (US edition), from the first issue in 1892 to the current month, reproduced in high-resolution colour page images. Log on to UCB Online, select the Library link and then the Athens list of resources. Scroll down and you will see the link for the Vogue Archive.

The Back Pain Show 2013

October Issue of International Therapist

The October issue of International Therapist, published by The Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) who have a useful website worth looking at, is now available in the Library. This issue includes an article (page 48) on the FHT Student of the Year, who has overcome adversity to complete her course and also a feature (page 66) on writer of holistic books Francesca Gould discussing, among other things, her time as a therapist and beauty lecturer. You might recognise Francesca Gould's name as we have several books by her in the Library.

Camexpo Complementary Event

Camexpo is the only dedicated event for the complementary, natural and integrated healthcare sector in the UK and is aimed at any practitioner, therapist, student or retailer involved in this sector. It is taking place on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October at Earls Court, London. See the event site for more info.

A Careers in Sports and Exercise Conference is taking place on Thursday 25th October 2012 at Worcester University.  The conference is FREE and suitable for university sports students, 16-19 school/college students, careers advisers and professionals within the sport and exercise sector, all seeking to expand their knowledge and understanding of career and training options in the industry. Mintel Student Ambassador Programme

Mintel has launched a new initiative aiming to engage students with the Mintel brand and offer a year long programme for higher education students to gain real business skills and industry experience to assist in the ever more competitive graduate job market.

Students can register their interest at mintel.com/studentambassador to sign up to become an ambassador with Mintel. Following this, applicants will then have the opportunity to apply for one of fifty ambassador roles via a selection process involving a creative project task - where submissions will be uploaded online, using drawing, writing, video or audio to represent their submission. Secret Interview - TV Programme of Interest

Watch Channel 5 on Wednesday 5th September between 7pm - 8pm, to see episode 3 of 'Secret Interview'. This episode follows two hairstylists undergoing a week of bizarre challenges. Nicky Clarke, celebrity hairdresser, is secretly watching them and will offer one of them a job at the end of the week. If you want to pick up some interview techniques, this programme might be worth watching .

There are two television programmes on Monday 23rd July that might be of interest.  Undercover Boss, Channel 4 at 9pm, sees former celebrity hairdresser Jacqui McIntosh, now a senior manager of The Francesco Group, going incognito to discover why the business is not doing as well as expected.
On BBC 2 at 9pm in  Horizon: The Truth About Looking Younger, plastic surgeon Rozina Ali explores how the ageing process affects human skin and why some skins age more than others.
